Assistant Director, Individual Giving

Position Summary

The Assistant Director of Individual Giving is responsible for the design and implementation of a comprehensive plan and strategies for working with Martha’s Table’s President & CEO, Chief External Relations Officer, and other gift officers to increase unrestricted and restricted gifts from individual and family foundation donors. This position leads the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of prospects, personally stewards a portfolio of donors at the $25,000+ level, and works collaboratively across Martha’s Table to increase funding from high-net‐worth donors through understanding of donors’ interests, passions, and values.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Individual Gift Fundraising

  • Create and manage strategy for mid-level and major donor identification, cultivation, solicitation, meaningful stewardship, and reporting for individuals and family foundations
  • Advise Marketing and Communications team on direct mail and online campaign strategy.
  • Manage a portfolio of 100 individual donor prospects (at the $25k - $75k level) and make direct asks.
  • Support individual giving portfolio of CEO and CERO ($75k+) through strategy and moves management for the organization’s top supporters.
  • Manage the Apple Society campaign, its implementation and the cultivation/stewardship of society members.
  • Attend various special events, promotions, community events, and serves as a representative for Martha’s Table.
  • Develop major donor insider reports and work with the communications team on other marketing and communications materials for the major gifts effort.
  • Supervise and mentor the Individual Giving Officer and Special Events Manager.

Prospect Research

  • Conduct research on donors and prospects (including individuals and family foundations) by utilizing the Internet, print and electronic sources, in-house files and documents, and interviews with fundraising staff.
  • Use research to identify, analyze, and qualify information on potential and current donors, with particular attention paid to matters relating to wealth capacity and philanthropic inclination.
  • Utilize quantitative criteria such as income, assets, liabilities, and giving patterns to evaluate prospects’ capacity and potential interest in supporting Martha’s Table; use such information to assist in prioritizing the prospect pool, forming solicitation strategies, and determining target ask amounts.

Organization/Regulatory Compliance

  • Maintain complete and timely records of contacts, proposals, tasks and other details with prospects and donors and store these records in Raiser’s Edge database. Provide reports and regular updates to senior leadership.
  • Work with CERO to engage program leaders in the donor reporting process, stewardship planning, and event management as organizational stewards
  • Participate in the development of policies and procedures relating to the major gifts program.
  • Analyze and develop multi-year plans to increase major gifts.
  • Implement strategic annual plan objectives while setting qualitative and quantitative major gift prospect management standards.
  • Oversee and monitor progress of the major gifts program towards annual goals.  Meet or exceed annually established goals for major giving.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • At least five (5) years of fundraising experience in a nonprofit environment.
  • Experience working with high-net-worth individuals and proven ability to raise significant five- figure + gifts from individuals and family foundations.
  • Experience managing annual giving efforts and/or events a plus.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and verbal/written communications skills, with the ability to work effectively and empathize with a wide range of constituencies in diverse communities.
  • High level of comfort and persistence in establishing contact with both managed and unmanaged donors/prospects; experience making cold calls a plus.
  • CRM/fundraising database experience, as well as understanding of wealth screening; Raiser’s Edge experience preferred.
  • Skilled in organizing resources and establishing priorities in an evolving, fast-paced environment.
  • Attention to detail and strong project management skills.
  • Strong understanding of and enthusiasm for Martha’s Table’s mission and programs, and ability to convey these effectively to donors.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university
