Weekend Volunteer Coordinator

Work days: Saturday and Sunday

Hours: 20 hours/week

Hourly Rate: $14/hour

Position Summary:

Working alongside the Volunteer Coordinator, the Weekend Volunteer Coordinator is an essential part of the Martha’s Table team that will spearhead volunteer outreach, recruitment and training for the Food and Education programs; and Martha’s Outfitters, our community thrift store.  S/he will develop partnerships and recruit volunteers.  S/he will coordinate logistics for volunteer assignments; and manage Volunteerhub.  The Weekend Volunteer Coordinator will assist with the planning of special events and may occasionally need to adjust his/her schedule to accommodate events and special activities The Weekend Volunteer Coordinator will need to be able to work independently with minimal supervision.  

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Manager and main point of contact for all volunteers on the weekend
  • Schedules volunteer assignments and appointments based on department and/or volunteer requirements.
  • Maintain volunteer automated scheduling system (Volunteer Hub), tracking and maintenance of accurate records of volunteer participation.
  • Develop partnerships and recruit volunteers for various projects in the organization. Outreach methods may include: presentations to schools; corporate and/or community groups; staffing information booths at community events; and utilizing social media.
  • Collect and share participant stories with the Communication department for use in public relations, social media and other marketing avenues.
  • Develop and facilitate orientation and training for volunteers.
  • Develop written work plans and timelines for implementation.
  • Revise program materials such as volunteer position descriptions and volunteer training materials.
  • Supervise volunteers, and develop and implement recognition activities for volunteers such as special events, awards, gifts, etc.
  • Evaluate progress made in achieving the program’s goals and report on progress in statistical and narrative reports.
  • Represent Martha’s Table at various donor and partnership events.
  • Assists in the planning and implementation of community/cultivation special events.
  • Serves as a back-up driver for McKenna’s Wagon as needed.
  • Have reliable access to volunteer and personnel emails even when not scheduled to be in office


  • Two years of work experience.
  • Strong computer skills: Word, Excel, social media platforms.
  • Must have demonstrated experience as a volunteer.
  • Skilled at taking initiative, problem solving, and working independently.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Skilled at building positive interpersonal relationships, working effectively as part of a team, and managing volunteers.
  • Strong written and verbal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, and community groups.  Comfortable with public speaking.
  • Computer literate and skilled at written communication, especially in developing program materials and reports; and tracking volunteer hours.
  • Comfortable using or willing to learn digital communication tools for communications and social media tools as a means to engage and inform the public.
  • Committed to the concept of volunteering and to making a difference in the community.
  • Have a real passion for social justice and the mission of Martha’s Table.
  • Able to respond to organizational change and maintain a positive attitude.
  • Enjoys working outdoors and indoors, with the ability to work long hours when needed

Education:         Bachelor’s Degree Preferred 

Preferred Qualifications/Skills:

  • Proficient in conversational Spanish
  • The ideal candidate is pro-active, creative, solution-oriented and passionate about improving food and education resources in DC
  • Must have the ability to work and relate with diverse multi-racial groups
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Two – three years of management experience, preferred
  • Strong group facilitation skills and conflict resolution experience
  • Ability to problem solve, think creatively, and follow through with tasks
  • Must have a sense of humor, a sense of adventure, and interest working in a fast paced environment with a growing organization!

Licensure/Certifications: Valid driver’s license and ability to drive passenger and cargo vans.
